The Story of the Belgian Sandwich Belgium has always had a love affair with good bread.

For generations, bakers rose before dawn to fill the streets with the smell of fresh baguettes, their golden crusts crackling as they left the oven. Out of this tradition grew something simple, yet deeply Belgian : the sandwich.
 

By the 1970s, a new culture had taken shape. Across Brussels, Liège and Antwerp, “sandwicheries” began to appear — places where lunch wasn’t just a quick bite, but a moment of indulgence. Unlike France or Italy, where the sandwich remained fairly traditional, Belgium went deeper.

We turned the sandwich into a world of creativity, layering it with unique sauces and rich recipes inspired by our cuisine. Filet américain préparé, creamy chicken curry, garlic scampi, brie with sirop de Liège and walnuts — these aren’t just fillings, they are dishes in their own right, reinvented inside fresh, crusty bread.
 

It was in this spirit that the Dagobert was born — a baguette piled high with ham, cheese, hard-boiled egg, crunchy vegetables and a generous dollop of real Belgian mayonnaise.

Named after a comic book character known for his abundance, the Dagobert became the king of Belgian sandwiches : rich, hearty, unapologetically generous.
 Over the years, Belgian creativity turned the sandwich into a canvas for endless variety.

What stayed the same was the soul — fresh bread, fresh ingredients, and a love for flavor.
 Today, this tradition is ready to cross the Atlantic. With La Baguette Louise, we bring the Belgian sandwich culture to America.
